Secrets only get darker with time…
The Earl of Moriston is an aristocrat, diplomat and occasional detective.
When his lordship first meets the ravishing Caroline Malcolm, he is taken aback by her reaction to him.
She turns as white as the ribbons that trim her elegant muslin gown, and looks as if she is about to faint from shock.
Unable to ignore a promising mystery, and by no means impervious to Miss Malcolm’s charms, he soon finds himself embroiled in events that prove to be much more stirring than he bargained for.
Aided, and sometimes impeded, by a vivid array of characters — including his caustic sister and exuberant younger brother — the earl perseveres with his investigation despite all opposition.
Even his provoking client, Miss Malcolm, considers him arrogant, autocratic, and secretly irresistible.
When his lordship stumbles across a splendidly devious plot involving priceless diamonds, suspicious ‘accidents’, and secrets that have been closely guarded for more than 20 years, a whole new world begins to emerge…
The Reluctant Heiress is the perfect combination of heart-warming romance and thought provoking mystery.
’A jaunty Regency mystery with romantic underpinnings, a high-spirited cast, and some delightful research into the period's theatrical lows.' – Kirkus Reviews

The Reluctant Heiress Earl of Moriston Mystery Book 1 edition by Annabel Laine Romance eBooks
For being a little traditional Regency story with a cutesy cover, this is a rather substantive plot with literate, intelligent writing. Be aware that it is NOT a romance. It's a mystery with just a smidgen of very understated romance thrown in. So if you are looking for something in the style of Barbara Metzger or Joan Smith, for example, this is not it.Annabel Laine is a pen name of Reay Tannahill, who published many more books of much more substance under her real name. Scottish Tannahill (1929-2007) was a British historian and scholar, author of such nonfiction work as FOOD IN HISTORY and SEX IN HISTORY. In 1990 her novel PASSING GLORY won the Romantic Novel of the Year Award. As Annabel Laine she only wrote this Heiress book, published in 1979, and THE MELANCHOLY VIRGIN, from 1982.
If you're a historical mystery lover, you'll find this to be a good read. I hadn't twigged on to whodunit until late in the game, just a chapter or two before the big reveal. And I enjoyed the methodical investigative process involved in the mystery's solution. Not to mention the author's knowledge of the period, which she put to good use.
To summarize the plot briefly: Beautiful Caroline Malcolm. after the recent accidental death of her mother, learns that her father, Colonel Malcolm, who had died some two years prior, was actually her stepfather. So Caroline wants to know who her biological father is. The only thing she has to go on is a pouch of 21 perfectly-matched diamonds and a note from her mother, "For Caro, from her father." Since her mother had led Caro to believe that Colonel Malcolm was her real father and had never ever talked of any other man in her life, it is a mystery indeed.
Caroline's "honorary uncle" and old friend of her late stepfather, the Duke of Wellington, arranges for Charles Dornay, Earl of Moriston, to help Caroline in her search. And with only those diamonds as a clue, Moriston does a fine job of investigating, with a little help from his brother John, sister Lady Susan, Susan's suitor Adam Gregory and Moriston's estate manager Matthew.
This is an excellent methodical procedural investigation, going from clue to clue to uncover the mystery. Possibilities of foul play to certain deceased characters and attempts on the life of others make for a more compelling mystery than just the search for the missing father. There's more to this than meets the eye.
The plot is entertaining and the characters are fairly well developed. The hero here, Moriston, is described as "rich, fashionable, man of superior sense and impeccable self possession." So true. He's somewhat full of himself, a bit condescending to others and seems to feel slightly superior, but it's fun to see his sisters and brothers take his attitude in stride. The heroine doesn't have a very big part in the plot. Lady Susan has more scenes and lines than she does. However, she comes across as an admirable female of the times she lived in. Don't expect her to be an intrepid 21st-century woman and she won't disappoint you.
What might disappoint is the romance, if that's what you were looking for here. The cover of the Kindle edition makes the book look as though it were one of those cute little traditional Regency romances. It's not. I like mysteries, perhaps more than I like romances, so I was not disappointed but romance readers are warned.

The Reluctant Heiress Earl of Moriston Mystery Book 1 edition by Annabel Laine Romance eBooks Reviews
Well worth the read. A good regency period romance that will keep you puzzled until the very end. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
This captivating story has Caroline presenting Charles with a case to investigate. She needs to find out who her father is --discreetly if possible. The only clue she can offer is that she has received a diamond each and every year, twenty-one of them, with a note, "To Caroline, from her father."
If you like your romance combined with mystery, I believe you would enjoy this book. I certainly did.
Based on the reviews I thought this would be a good read. I could not get through this book and I normally will continue just in case a book has a slow start. I couldn't even force myself to get through this book. I think this book just wasn't for me. The start seemed slow and meandering and I couldn't get past it.
This was a setting which was a bit different. We have a feisty heroine which is very good and we have a a rather complicated story ahead.
Caroline Malcolm has just discovered that the man she has lived throughout her life with is not her father. Her quiet, unassuming mother had a relationship of some sort and has left virtually no clues behind of where the search should start.
Lord Moriston is drawn into this rather entangled web which is fraught with danger as very few people know of the story and the few who do know do not want it uncovered.
A twist on the normal Regency romance.
I thought this to be one of the best Regency novels I've found on Unlimited. It is literate and dryly humorous, very much in the style of Georgette Heyer. Unlike many books I find on Unlimited, it is properly punctuated, has good grammar, uses apostrophes correctly, and does not misuse homonyms. Now I find that's because it is a reissue of an older print book by a real author, unfortunately deceased. That means there are probably very few others by the author to find and read. A shame! Many presumably self-published books I find on Unlimited have entertaining characters and plots, but all too few of these have been copy-edited into correct grammar, punctuation, and word usage. This, fortunately, was one of the good ones. The only flaw I found concerned the diamonds which were central to the plot, described as more that 25 carats each. I checked, and this would make each of them approximately 6 inches across and weighing nearly 2 ounces apiece, much too large and heavy to set 21 of them, plus multiple smaller stones, in a necklace! Other than this little error, however, an excellent read.
An enjoyable read.
Very nice little mystery/detective set in the Regency era. Well-plotted; well-written. It's not a romance.
